Setting up on Google TV or Android TV

Install Tunin Live Pro on Chromecast with Google TV, Nvidia Shield, or a Sony, Philips or TCL Android TV — step by step, including sideloading.

Google TV and Android TV cover a lot of hardware: the Chromecast with Google TV dongle, an Nvidia Shield, and the software built into most Sony, Philips, TCL and Hisense televisions sold in the last few years.

Good news — the process is the same on all of them.

Before you start

  • Your device connected to wi-fi and signed into a Google account
  • Your welcome email from Tunin Live with your login and download address
  • Five minutes

Step 1 — Unlock Developer options

Android TV hides this by default.

  1. SettingsSystemAbout
  2. Scroll to Build (or Android TV OS build)
  3. Select it seven times. A message confirms you are now a developer.

Slightly absurd, entirely standard.

Step 2 — Allow unknown apps

SettingsAppsSecurity & restrictionsInstall unknown apps, then switch Downloader on.

The exact menu path shifts a little between manufacturers. If yours differs, search Settings for “unknown”.

Step 3 — Install Downloader

Open the Google Play Store on the device and install Downloader by AFTVnews. Free, and the same app used on Fire Stick.

Step 4 — Download and install

Open Downloader, enter the address from your welcome email, select Go. When it finishes, choose Install, then Open.

Step 5 — Sign in

Enter your username and password. Channels load automatically.

Making it easy to find later

This is the one genuine annoyance with Google TV: sideloaded apps often don’t appear on the home screen. Google TV’s launcher prioritises content from services it knows about.

To find it: SettingsAppsSee all appsTunin Live Pro.

To pin it, open the Apps row on the home screen, find it under Your apps, long-press, and move it to the front. On some televisions you can add it to favourites instead.

If something goes wrong

No Play Store on your TV. Some manufacturers ship a locked-down launcher. You can sideload the downloader from a USB stick, but honestly, a £30 Fire Stick is usually less painful. See the Fire Stick guide.

App installs but the picture stutters. Not an install problem — see why IPTV buffers.

Nvidia Shield users: you have far more processing power than you need for this, and everything above works unchanged.

Common questions

Which devices does this cover?

Chromecast with Google TV, Nvidia Shield, Xiaomi Mi Box, and Android TV built into Sony, Philips, TCL and Hisense sets. The steps are near-identical across all of them.

My TV has no Play Store. What now?

Some manufacturers ship a restricted launcher. In that case sideload the downloader itself via a USB stick, or use a cheap Fire Stick instead — often the faster route.

Will it appear on my Google TV home row?

Sideloaded apps often don't show in the main Google TV launcher. Look under Your apps, or add it to favourites so it appears on the home screen.

Does the Google Assistant remote work in the app?

Yes, for standard D-pad navigation. Voice search inside the app depends on your device's Android TV version.
